Around and around

…and around up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum.

It’s not as bad on the legs as some lighthouses and tower monuments can be, because it has landings at regular intervals for rest breaks, but it’s still a good workout. I can’t imagine hauling a 30 pound can of fuel oil up those steps even once, let alone several times a night like the light keeper had to do to keep the light burning!

The current lighthouse was built in 1874, with a light keeper’s cottage added 2 years later, but there has been a lighthouse at this location on the eastern Florida coast ever since the late 1500s, when the Spaniards built a watchtower after founding the colony of San Agustin.
