Fountain of the sun

Since sun worshippers flock to the French Riviera for sea and sand, it seems appropriate to have a fountain dedicated to the sun god at the edge of the old city of Nice, France.

“La fontaine du soleil” by sculptor Alfred Auguste Janniot (1889-1969) was unveiled in 1956 and renovated in 2011. It is meant to be an allegorical representation of the solar system with a statue of Apollo as the sun in the middle, surrounded in the basin by images of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn.
